FAQ

Many people ask the same questions when they are deciding if they can tackle their relationship problems through couples coaching. Below, you will find some common questions and answers.

What's the difference between couples coaching and couples therapy?

There is a lot of overlap between couples coaching and couples therapy. In both, you work with a well-trained professional, learn tools, and figure out how to be happy with one another. In couples coaching, the focus tends to be more on the present and future. In couples counseling, you are more likely to focus on childhood and past relationship issues. While there are plenty of exceptions, this is the general difference. If you are looking for help improving your relationship, coaching may be a better option. If you are looking to resolve deep relationship injuries or completely change the relationship, couples counseling is probably the better option.

Do we have to be married to use the relationship tools?

The relationship tools taught in the courses and programs offered by Synergy Coaching are equally effective for married and other long-term relationships.

Will coaching services affect my security clearance?

A major benefit of coaching is that it does not related to your medical or mental health records. It is considered “psychoeducation and support.” Therefore, there are no records or information to disclose in a background check.

I just learned that my partner had an affair/My partner just learned about my affair. Will coaching help us save our relationship?

In most cases, learning about an affair is a serious crisis in a relationship. For most couples, they need the structure, support, and clarity that couples counseling can offer. A small number of couples will be able to repair their issues when 1) they have decided to stay together and understand why the affair happened or 2) they can follow the activities in a course such as Put the Past in the Past: Roadmap to Relationship Repairs. You will need to carefully weigh the options to decide what is the best path for you and your partner.
